“I challenge the darkness. If nothing else, then at least around myself, I will not let it settle.” – Shaheed Jaswant Singh Khalra.
On September 6, 2026, the Sikh Religious Society Board of Trustees officially renamed the Sikh Religious Society Library as the Shaheed Jaswant Singh Khalra Memorial Library. This dedication honors the extraordinary courage and contributions of Shaheed Jaswant Singh Khalra Ji and ensures that his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
Head Granthi Bhai Lakhvinder Singh Ji led an Ardaas to commemorate the occasion, and the library was formally renamed in accordance with a Board resolution passed on July 19, 2026.
Shaheed Jaswant Singh Khalra (1952–1995) was a Sikh human-rights defender who uncovered evidence of forced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and secret cremations in Punjab. Through his careful examination of official records, he restored names and identities to thousands of people whom history was in danger of forgetting.
Despite threats to his life, Khalra Ji continued his pursuit of truth and justice. He believed that one person’s courage could inspire others just as one lamp can light many more. He was abducted and killed in 1995, but the truth he brought into the light could not be extinguished.
Knowledge has the power to preserve memory, awaken courage, and illuminate the truth. Seek knowledge, stand for truth, and let what you learn light the corner of the world where you stand.
